spring trolling

Ice-out is a much anticipated event among Maine fishermen. This is partly because many anglers spend lots of time during the winter tying flies and dreaming about the first day they can get out on the water to use them. Mostly, however, it is due to the fact that some of the largest salmon and trout caught on many lakes are taken during the first month of the season.

Spring trolling typically involves using light tackle to present smelt (or insect) imitating lures and flies within ten feet of the surface. We also do lots of casting in brook mouths and around shoreline structure that holds smelts. Many of my spring trolling trips are done on remote lakes and ponds, where I have boats stashed. These waters are not readily accessible to most other anglers. We also trailer boats to a variety of more accessible lakes as well.

Spring trolling trips cost $320 per day and are designed to accommodate two anglers. All of the fishing gear and a shore lunch are provided. I'd be happy to help arrange your lodging while you are in the area. Custom itineraries can be arranged upon request.
